Phylicia Rashad Tapped To Star In ‘Rocky’ Sequel ‘Creed’

Former Cosby Show star Phylicia Rashad reportedly closed a deal to join the cast of the upcoming Rocky spin-off/sequel, Creed, as Apollo Creed’s widow.

The film, which is suspected to begin filming in Philadelphia sometime this month, stars Michael B. Jordan as Creed’s grandson, Adonis, who desires to step into the ring to honor his late grandfather’s legacy. The original Apollo Creed died in Rocky IV, initially training Rocky in the series before that.

Sylvester Stallone will star as Rocky, who is set to return the favor by reluctantly training the younger Creed. Tessa Thompson from Dear White People will also star in the film.

Creed marks a reunion for Jordan and director Ryan Coogler. The two previously teamed up for the critically acclaimed drama Fruitvale Station.

Rashad recently came to the defense of her former co-star, Bill Cosby, who has been under fire for several accounts of sexual abuse allegations. After reportedly saying “forget these women” when asked about the allegations, Rashad told ABC she was misquoted, adding, “I am a woman, I would never say such a thing.”

ShowBiz 411 has since issued a clarification:

I did not misquote Phylicia Rashad. But she didn’t mean for it to be taken the way it was, and I should have punctuated. There was NEVER the meaning in ‘Forget those women’ that she was saying to actually forget or dismiss then. She meant, ‘those women aside’ – as in, she’s not talking about that, she’s talking about Cosby’s legacy being destroyed. It was conversational.

Creed is slated to debut sometime in 2016.
