Two ‘Sorority Sisters’ Suspended from Alpha Kappa Alpha

Sorority Sisters Suspended

Looks like some of the controversy behind VH1’s new reality show Sorority Sisters has caught up with some of the cast members.

Two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. that appear on the show have been suspended. According to the sorority’s official website, April McRae and Rwanda “Joy” Hammond were suspended on December 26, 2014. Both sorority member’s suspension will end on July 15, 2016.

McRae and Hammond’s suspension were listed amongst other suspended members.

No official explanation behind the suspension of the two members was given by the Alpha Kappa Alpha, though many assume it’s because of their behavior on the show.

In an interview with The Root, McRae said officials from the national offices reached out to her and expressed their views on her involvement with the show.

“The regional director for my area reached out—They were under the impression that the first petition had silenced the show,” April told The Root. “I did receive a letter about the show and how they felt about my participation. My lawyer is involved now, so I’d rather not discuss that.”

Sorority Sisters began facing criticism even before it’s premiere on December 15, 2014. Boycott request and petitions have taken over the internet calling for the show to be cancelled, but the network says that will not happen.

“There are currently no plans to change the series and it seems to be connecting with its audience,” a network spokeswoman said in a statement.

The statement added that the Sorority Sisters premiere was watched by over 1.3 million people and was the most watched non-sports cable program among women ages 18 to 49.
