Despite the petitions, boycott hashtags and criticism of the reality show’s depiction of black sorority members, VH1 announced that they will not be canceling the new controversial reality show Sorority Sisters.
The show drew protests even before the release, both when it was revealed last summer and when a promotional video was released online. With the typical melodramatic rifts of reality shows, the promo showcased fireworks with insults and tears between cast members who all graduated from colleges in Atlanta.
The corporate backlash included an online petition that drew more than 40,000 supporters. Several sponsors, such as Carmex, Hallmark, Honda and Crayola have all pulled their advertisements from the network during the 10-episode series.
However, VH1 responded in an email, saying:
“There are currently no plans to change the series and it seems to be connecting with its audience. Due to the confidential nature of our agreements with our advertising partners, we never speak to specifics about clients and their media plans. But we do enjoy successful, long-term partnerships with our advertisers and are happy to honor any requests to move spots to other parts of our schedule.”
The 1.3 million viewers the show received during premiere night probably didn’t help sway the network’s decision either.
