The 2015 awards season is almost here, and the nominees for the 72nd Golden Globe Awards have officially been announced with historic film Selma receiving nods in four different categories.
The Oprah Winfrey-produced film has been nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama. David Oyelowo, who stars as Martin Luther King Jr. in the film, is up for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, and Ava DuVernay is up for Best Director. On the music side, John Legend and Common’s “Glory” (from Selma) is also up for Best Original Song, Motion Picture.
Selma centers around the iconic civil rights leader as he goes head to head with President Lyndon B. Johnson (Tom Wilkinson), FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (Dylan Baker) and Alabama Gov. George Wallace (Tom Roth) to ensure equal voting rights for all men and women. Selma takes place during three months in 1965 and ultimately led to President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Selma opens in limited release on Christmas Day, and the wide release is slated for Jan. 9 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.
Final ballots will be mailed to all HFPA members by Dec. 22. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will serve as the hosts of the Golden Globes for a third and final time when it airs live on NBC on Jan. 11, 2015.
