GOP Aide Resigns After Criticism of Obama Girls

Obama and Daughters Turkey Pardoning

Republican congressional aide Elizabeth Lauten has resigned from her position as communications director for U.S. Rep. Steve Fincher, R-Tenn Monday morning, after making controversial comments about President Obama’s teenage daughters, Fox News confirms.

Lauten, took to Facebook after the annual presidential turkey-pardoning ceremony Wednesday and chastised both Sasha, 13, and Malia Obama, 16, urging them to “show a little class.”

The full post read:

“Dear Sasha and Malia, I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family, try showing a little class,” Lauten wrote. “At least respect the part you play. Then again your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the ‘good role model’ department. Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don’t make faces during televised public events.”

Though Lauten was not the first to comment on the behavior of the girls who seemed very bored with the ceremony, many think she crossed the line.

The post has since been deleted, but not before it made it’s rounds on social media and news sites, causing many to fire back at Lauten for speaking so harshly of teenagers.

Lauten issued an apology on Friday via Facebook.

“When I first posted on Facebook I reacted to an article and I quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager,” Lauten wrote. “After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were.”

But the media firestorm Lauten created did not stop after the apology. The media continued to attack, and even suggested that she resign.

In a phone interview with NBC News on Monday, Lauten announced that she would do just that. She says her resignation is “in the works.”
