Utah Police Shoot and Kill Black Man

Susan Hunt from Saratoga Springs, Utah mourns the death of her 22-year-old son, who was shot and killed by police outside a fast food restaurant last Wednesday, Sept. 10.

“It’s a safe little community and they killed him,” she said on Friday. “They killed my son because he’s black. No white boy with a little sword would they shoot while he’s running away.” Darrien Nathaniel Hunt, whose father is black and mother is white, apparently purchased the Katana blade at an Asian souvenir shop in the area.

Most agree that Hunt was seen with a three-foot sword, either in his hand or strapped to his back, but witnesses have explained differing accounts of the situation. Some described him as “distressed,” while other said he was “totally calm,” according to media reports.

Investigators broke their silence over the incident, saying the boy lunged at the officers with a “brandished” sword, at which time Hunt was shot by police, according to a statement from Utah County Chief Deputy Attorney Tim Taylor.

However, autopsy reports show that Hunt was shot numerous times from behind as he ran away from police, KSL reported.

“Those stupid cops thought they had to murder over a toy,” Ms. Hunt said. “This is my baby. This is my family, and they ruined my family.”
