President Barack Obama commented for the first time on the controversial shooting death of unarmed teen Michael Brown from Ferguson, Missouri, calling it “heartbreaking.”
In a statement released by the White House, Obama gave his condolences to the family and appealed that the community comfort each other in a way that does not bring more violence.
Obama’s statements read as follows:
The death of Michael Brown is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and his community at this very difficult time. As Attorney General Holder has indicated, the Department of Justice is investigating the situation along with local officials, and they will continue to direct resources to the case as needed.
I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. Along with our prayers, that’s what Michael and his family, and our broader American community, deserve.
Obama’s comments comes after Brown’s death set off incidents involving riots, looting and violent confrontations with the police.
Witnesses tell KMOV-TV that Brown was unarmed and had his hands in the air when he was shot multiple times by a Ferguson police officer, who is white.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has instructed the Justice Department’s civil rights division to monitor the case, and the FBI said it was assisting police in the investigation.
