Karyn Parsons (Hilary Banks) from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will be launching the Kickstarter for her organization, Sweet Blackberry, this week… but she can’t help but reminisce about the close-knit relationships she made through the show’s cast. Unfortunately, someone who always pushed her to do greater things will not be present for the big day.
The late James Avery (Philip Banks) died of complications from an open heart surgery at the age of 68 last December, but it’s the loving bond that Parsons, Avery and the rest of the Fresh Prince cast have for each other that helped Parsons go forward with the plans for her organization.
“It’s like family,” Parson said. “We went through something so major in our lives; we spent six years with each other. Afterward, we hung out together. We all wanted to be together.”
With the launch of Kickstarter, Parsons needed to implement incentives to get people to donate funds for her to create a short film about Janet Collins. Comedian Chris Rock would narrate the story of Collins, the first black prima ballerina to also be the first African-American soloist to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Everyone from Will Smith to Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton Banks) to Tatyana Ali (Ashley Banks) to Geoffrey the Butler (Joseph Marcell) pitched in to help out Sweet Blackberry in one way or another. It’s mission — “to bring little-known stories of African-American achievement to kids.”
