Dallas Mavericks Acquire Tyson Chandler From Knicks With Major Trade

The Dallas Mavericks and the New York Knicks conducted a six-player trade that will send center Tyson Chandler back to the team he won a championship with in 2011.

It became a priority for the Mavericks to acquire Chandler after their first-round playoff exit against San Antonio, but also stand optimistic that the addition will increase the team’s odds of recruiting LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony since the two superstars are currently available in free agency.

However, the Mavericks lost two starters – point guard Jose Calderon and center Samuel Dalembert – along with prized young point guard Shane Larking, reserve guard Wayne Ellington and the 34th and 51st picks in Thursday’s draft.

“The journey to build this team for the upcoming season and beyond continues,” said new Knicks president Phil Jackson. “We have added players with this move that will fit right in to our system while maintaining future flexibility.”

At this point, the Knicks are doing well for financial flexibility as well, if all players acquired through the deal remain on the roster. The franchise will be saving $3 million in cap space for this summer, but forfeited $5.2 million in cap space for summer of 2015, where they are expected to chase big-name athletes in free agency.
