Beyoncé and Jay Z will be embarking on their first joint tour this summer, hitting 16 North American cities with some of their greatest hits.
The power couple came out on top with one of spring’s biggest duets, Drunk in Love, which sold 1.6 million downloads and peaked at No.2 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Beyoncé surprised the world when she released her self-titled album and 17 music videos to go along with it without any promotion, yet managed to still sell over 2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
As for Jay Z, Magna Carta Holy Grail was released through a smartphone app last July and given away to 1 million Samsung Galaxy users. It sold 2.2 million copies, 1 million of which were purchased by Samsung.
Reports surfaced last week blaming On the Run’s poor ticket sales on the infamous elevator fight between Jay Z and Beyoncé’s sister, Solange. However, those rumors have been put to rest since the tour has been named to sell $86 million in ticket sales, according to Live Nation.
“People are definitely infatuated with them as a power couple, first and foremost,” says CEO of AllHipHop.com, Chuck Creekmur. “A lot of people look at them as royal family of sorts and idealize them in a lot of way to represent true love and a fairy tale coming true.”
It’s been nearly 12 years since the power couple released their debut collaboration ’03 Bonnie and Clyde, but will their On the Run tour be a storybook success?
The tour launches TODAY at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami!
