Miami Heat star LeBron James will be exercising his option of early-termination to become a free agent this summer, confirmed Sam Amick of USA Today.
James is the first of the Heat’s Big Three to either opt out or opt in for next season. However, this does not mean that the Heat superstar has plans of leaving Miami; it just means that he has that option available if he chooses to take that route.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, James intends on imposing pressure for the franchise in order to improve their roster. He was reportedly disappointed when the team chose to elect amnesty for Mike Miller in the past year to reduce Miami’s luxury tax bill and not add anyone of value to the team.
Nonetheless, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here… James has the right to become a free agent, and it gives both him and the team flexibility. Of course franchises are jumping at the idea of getting the four-time MVP for themselves. The Houston Rockets have already expressed interest in pushing for James’ superior services, while teams like the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers are sure to get involved.
Even if James’ ultimately stays in Miami, his decision to opt out instead of opting introduce a shot of suspense for the duration of this offseason.
