It’s been a rocky road to Mariah Carey’s 14th album, from the flop of a few singles to her drama-plagued stint with Nicki Minaj on ‘American Idol,’ to her shoulder injury that nearly derailed her plans altogether. The mother of two began working on the album in 2010, prior to the birth of her twins Moroccan and Monroe. The singer reveals in a Billboard cover story that she will be taking on surprise approach with the release of her new album. Is this a page out of Beyoncé’s playbook? After all, Bey’s surprise tactic with her self-titled album ranked at No.1 after selling over 600,000 digital copies in three days.
Carey plans on releasing physical copies of her album one week after they’re available for download via to-be-announced digital partners. She says the upcoming album will pick up where her life last left off five years ago. It will follow her 2009 “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” which attained just one Top 10 hit (“Obsessed”) and sold at disappointing numbers… low enough to cancel a planned remix album. However, Carey’s duet with Miguel last summer “#Beautiful” was a bonafide hit, selling 1.2 million downloads and peaking at No. 15 on the Hot 100 list, among other great singles.
The issue will not officially release until May 3rd, but you will be able to read the full cover story on Billboard.com Monday morning.
