Steve Harvey capped off his Christmas list with a one-on-one interview with President Barack Obama. The 56-year-old TV personality shared his greatest moment being a point in the interview when the president talked about his grandmother who passed in her eighties. This touched a soft spot for Harvey because his mother had also passed in her eighties.
“I heard a rumor,” started Steve Harvey, “I heard a rumor that your grandmother and my mother have met and that they’re on the front row watching us right now.” It was a moment that set the tone for an interview that was different than most interviews. Steering clear of politics, the comedy king discussed their wives, daughters, parenthood and plenty more in the duration of their interview.
They also touched on the viral photograph of Obama’s “funeral selfie” with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during Tuesday’s memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Many criticized the photo for being inappropriate levity in the midst of a somber occasion.
Steve Harvey deemed the incident as being “perfectly fine.”
“So what?” he asked. “It was a celebration of life. Mandela, you know, it wasn’t like what happened to Martin Luther King, he was taken from us at an early age. Mandela lived. It was a celebration of life. People want to be seen with the president.”
The official interview with President Obama will air on Dec. 20 on the ‘Steve Harvey’ talk show on NBC.
