Obama Launches Initiative To Cure HIV
On the heels of the 25th World AIDS Day, President Obama announced a $100 million initiative to find a new generation of therapies and a cure for the virus that infects approximately 50,000 Americans a year.
Obama announced at the National Institute of Health, “The United States should be at the forefront of new discoveries into how to put people into long-term remission without requiring lifelong therapies — or better yet, eliminate it completely.”
During a White House event on Monday to mark World AIDS Day, the president pledged that the US would contribute up to $5 billion in the next five years to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria if the other countries match twice that amount. The Global Fund is holding its fourth replenishment meeting this week in Washington with the goal of raising $15 billion to cover their programs supporting HIV therapy for over 5 million people as well as treatments for people with tuberculosis and malaria from 2014 through 2016.
