The first thing fans learned from the debut “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” trailer is that the Marvel studio doesn’t need a parachute when he jumps out of a plane.
Judging by the rest of the 2 minutes and 30 seconds that follow — he doesn’t need The Hulk, Iron Man or Thor, either.
Unlike his flashier teammates, Captain America is facing a shadowy threat that he can’t just punch his way out of — although there’s plenty of that in the trailer, too — in a storyline that’s heavily influenced by ‘70s conspiracy thrillers. And what better way to channel that vibe than add “All The President’s Men” veteran Robert Redford to the cast.
Captain America, though, is knee deep in reinforcements — including the flying Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, who’s back to jumping off catwalks and firing guns.
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo and also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Emily VanCamp and Sebastian Stan, hits theaters April 4, 2014.
