That being said, it was with much interest that I and likely several of you viewed Slate’s article “How black people use Twitter” last week. Upon first read, I have to admit that I really wasn’t offended by anything that the author Farhad Manjoo had written. After being a writer on the Internets for the past three years, I had long accepted that most people who comment on facets of blackness are often not black themselves. It was for this reason that I didn’t even flinch when Manjoo described himself as a “non-white person” in what can only be described as an attempt to identify with African-Americans yet be an exception towards the audience of those non-black persons for whom “Late Night Black Twitter” is an obsession.

Steven Holmes, a teenager from Coventry, England, suddenly found himself the target of a Twitter-storm when West singled him out as the only person he’d choose to follow.

“I just commented on something on Kanye West’s account and next thing I know he’s following me,” Holmes told his hometown paper, the Coventry Telegraph.

After he realized he’d been singled out, an elated Holmes thanked West on his account, Tweeting, “Holy s— bro thx for following!” West, who’s been making headlines for his vastly entertaining tweets, responded in kind, “You are the chosen one dun dun dun dun.”

In much the same way that Prince has been promoting his albums for the last few years, Prince invited the reporter into his home to spend the day with him in order to get a taste of Prince’s life, ending with a sit down interview to cap off the experience. For the most part, this latest interview/experience with the Daily Mirror played out in the same way but it’s the quotes that Prince gave to the paper that are getting all the attention this time around. According to Prince, the Internet is “completely over” in an “outdated” way.

Video game developer Ubisoft announced it would release a new dancing-and-singing game featuring Michael Jackson this holiday season. The as-yet-unnamed game will be among the first to use Kinect and Move, the respective motion-detecting camera systems for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 due out later this year.

“Your goal is to dance like Michael,” said Tony Key, Ubisoft’s marketing vice president. “Do what the guy on the screen is doing and you’re there. It’ll score you based on the quality of your performance.”

The heart pounding event began with world renowned mash-up master Z-Trip who started off the night and warmed up the crowd with his trademark sounds.

First up was an all-out celebration of DJ Hero® 2′s incredible line-up of world-class artists ensued, featuring live sets from all-star DJs and in-game playable characters, Grammy® winner and multi-platinum selling artist David Guetta, along with progressive house producer Deadmau5, part of dance music’s elite. Storming the stage with a high octane mini-set, global superstar Usher, complete with live band and dancers, brought down the house with a performance of his current #1 hit “OMG,” with a current audience reach of over 160 million, along with chart-topping singles “Caught Up” and “Yeah.”

The event brought skate acrobatics to life with a live Tony Hawk skate demo accompanied by Z-Trip who was once again at the head of the turntables. Hawk’s performance went BIG, with larger than life jumps, huge grabs and over-the-top tricks in the spirit of Tony Hawk™: SHRED, the next game in the venerable skating franchise.

A heart-pounding collaborative performance of Queen’s classic anthem, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” featured on Guitar Hero®: Warrior of Rock’s 93 track on-disc set list, was lead by artist Maynard James Keenan and over 200 of Los Angeles’s most awe-inspiring gospel singers accompanied by a 75-piece orchestra. Innovative and ground-breaking Grammy® Award winning performer EMINEM ignited the crowd as he closed the all-star event in celebration of the year’s most anticipated title Call of Duty®: Black Ops and was joined on stage by drumming legend Travis Barker. That’s just what Microsoft did inviting people on a scavenger hunt to join them for a concert in Atlanta. The event promoted the launch of its new phone, the Kin, which has social media at its heart.

The inconspicuous concert in a roller derby hall was headlined by hip-hop icon Big Boi from Outkast and drew more than 1,000 people in less than three hours.

Microsoft product manager Jeremiah Glodoveza said the experiment exemplified the power of social media to mobilize an audience — an idea that is the core concept behind the company’s new phone, he said.

“We believe in social media,” Glodoveza said. “We believe in social networking. The Kin is a phone that was purposefully built for people who are navigating their social lives.”

The game is developed by 4mm Games, a studio created in part by the former co-founders of Rockstar Games, best known for Grand Theft Auto and the recently released Red Dead Redemption.

The Rapstar package, which includes a wired microphone, will sell for $69.99 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and $59.99 on the Wii.

Now singer and actress Alicia Keys is turning to the Internet to empower and connect women to help them find their inner “superwoman.”

Her new Web site, IAAS.com — named after her song “I Am a Superwoman” — is a place women can gather to share dreams, goals, struggles and advice.

“This dream has been to really create a neighborhood, an online community, a place,” she said.

A place, she said, for “the many ways that we can create the life that we dream of and talk about fashion, and talk about places that we love to go, talk about our children and our families, talk about our jobs and our careers, talk about finances and how to really get to the places that you dream of.”
