Nation’s pupils find few black men to call Mister
October 15, 2009
Lenny Macklin made it to 10th grade before having a teacher who looked like him — an African-American male. Gregory Georges graduated from high school without ever being taught by a black man.
Only about 2 percent of teachers nationwide are African-American men. But experts say that needs to change if educators expect to reduce minority achievement gaps and dropout rates.
Macklin, now an 18-year-old college student, said he understands the circle that keeps many of his peers out of the classroom professionally.
“A lot of males, they don’t like being in school because they can’t relate to their teacher,” said Macklin, of Pittsburgh. “So why would you want to work there?”
American teachers are overwhelmingly white (87 percent) and female (77 percent), despite minority student populations of about 44 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Bill Cosby lends support to Detroit Public Schools
September 10, 2009
Blending commentary with comedy and criticism, Bill Cosby challenged Detroit parents to be more active in their children’s education and back an effort to improve the troubled public schools.
The activist and entertainer said Tuesday that he supports the district’s emergency financial manager, Robert Bobb, and a campaign to retain the schools’ shrinking enrollment. Bobb and Cosby were scheduled to go door-to-door late Tuesday afternoon, to persuade parents to keep their children in, or return them to, the district.
“This has a chance,” Cosby told reporters at a news conference. “And we’re going to knock on these doors because they weren’t open. And we’re going to talk to people to get them to understand the seriousness of a child left without a reason to understand math, without a reason to study and be able to understand English.”

Obama Calls for Service, Beautiful Dolls Answer!
September 2, 2009
On Patriots’ Day, a “Pretty . . . Philanthropic” group, will kickoff, launch and stand in civic pride! The Black Doll Affair [BDA] announces the kickoff of its third chapter and the launch of the Ambassadolls!
In a federal challenge to increase volunteerism, via the United We Serve Program, President Obama called on U.S. citizens to serve their country. In response, The Black Doll Affair is extending its mission to our Nation’s Capital.
Civil rights activists and psychologists, Kenneth and Mamie Clark are known for their 1940s “doll test” where black children were tested to determine racial perception and preference. The majority of children selected the white doll as the preferred doll and attributed positive characteristics to it and negative characteristics to the black doll. May 2007, ‘A Girl Like Me‘, the documentary by Kiri Davis, an African-American teenage filmmaker, is featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. After witnessing Kiri’s mirror image ‘doll test’ results, Dana Hill created BDA. With the slogan, “We’re pretty . . . philanthropic,” BDA has chapters in Georgia and Florida. Read more
