Another historic moment of the evening went to John Legend after he earned an Emmy for “Jesus Christ Superstar.” At 39, Legend is one of the youngest EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner and is also the first African-American man to earn that honor. The first black entertainer to receive an EGOT was Whoopi Goldberg, who earned it in 2002.

“Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories. Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar.” The crooner wrote on Instagram. “So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air.”

The Creative Arts Emmys, which are held a week before the 70th annual Emmy Awards, honors “artistic and technical achievement” in various television program genres including, guest performances in a weekly series, animation series, documentary and reality programming.
