Marvel to Release Spinoff Comic Book Series Based on the Princess of Wakanda, Shuri

T’Challa… step to the side because there’s a new Marvel star in town. In an exciting announcement, Marvel revealed that Shuri, Princess of Wakanda, will be getting her own self-titled series!

After the Wakandan tech-genius made a big impression on viewers, Marvel announced the launch of the standalone comic series with a superstar author! According to Bustle, award winning Afrofuturist author Nnedi Okorafor, Ph.D., who previously wrote for Black Panther: Long Live the King and Wakanda Forever, will write the spinoff – with Eisner award-winning artist Leonardo Romero handling the artwork.

[Shuri is] an African young woman of genius level intelligence who is obsessed with technology and has traveled spiritually so far into the past that she’s seen Wakanda before it was Wakanda. The Ancestors call her Ancient Future. And she’s super ambitious. What do I love about her? Alllll that and more,” Okorafor said to Bustle. “She’s a character in the Marvel Universe who really sings to me.”

The comic is reported to center on Shuri dealing with the loss of her brother, who is lost in a mission in space and leaves the citizens of Wakanda wondering who will be their next fearless leader. As the next in line for the throne, Shuri is pulled from the comfort of her lab in exchange for a higher role, the new leader of Wakanda.

“Shuri is happiest in a lab, surrounded by gadgets of her own creation. She’d rather be testing gauntlets than throwing them.” The official Marvel synopsis reads. “But a nation without a leader is a vulnerable one — and Shuri may have to choose between Wakanda’s welfare and her own.”

Shuri is expected to release October 2018!
