Childish Gambino Releases Powerful New Single and Visuals ‘This is America’

Donald Glover had quite a weekend! While serving double duty as both musical guest and host on Saturday Night Live, the award-winning actor and artist released a new single and politically charged music video titled “This Is America.”

Directed by Atlanta director Hiro Murai, the visuals may seem surreal, but is filled with thought-provoking messages. In the four minute video, a shirtless Glover – also known as his musical alter ego Childish Gambino – is seen dancing in an open factory while various chaotic scenes unfold behind him. At first glance, the several symbolic messages may go right under your nose as Glover performs with children –however if you pay close attention, you can see that Glover is showing the state of America today.

In the video, the multi-talented entertainer tackles the theme of gun violence, police brutality and distraction today’s issues. In the first scene, Glover executes a blindfolded black man, later on, he guns down a black choir with an assault rifle – similar to the Charleston Church Shooting. As the video goes on, viewers can see chaos erupting behind Glover, who seems to be distracted by dancing.

“This Is America” wasn’t exactly a solo for the Atlanta musician. Throughout the track, listeners can hear features from several artist including BlocBoy JB, 21 Savage, Quavo, Young Thug and Slim Jxmmi. The single is the first track from Childish Gambino since the release of his acclaimed 2016 album, “Awaken! My Love.” Although a release date has not been confirmed, Gambino announced that he is retiring is hip-hop alter ego after his next full-length album. Announced earlier this year, Gambino will also kick off his North American tour in September with guest Vince Staples and Rae Sremmurd.

“This Is America” is now available to stream of Apple Music and Spotify. Check out the video for “This Is America” below.
