John Legend to Star as Jesus Christ in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert

John Legend will be putting his angelic voice to use in the most perfect way! It has been announced that the 10-time Grammy winning artist has been cast as Jesus Christ in NBC’s upcoming “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert!”

“I’m thrilled to join the cast of this production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert!’” Legend said. “It’s such a powerful, meaningful musical and I’m humbled to be part of this performance.”

The Musical ran for over 700 performances on Broadway from 1971-73 and was responsible for spawning a Top 40 hit, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and a number 1 album soundtrack – as Today reports. “Jesus Christ Superstar” is based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’ life, ending with the crucifixion. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who wrote the musical, will also serve as executive producers for the event.

“We are overjoyed to have world-class musical artist and producer John Legend starring as Jesus,” NBC Entertainment chairman, Robert Greenblatt said. “This score demands a singer with an amazing range, not to mention an actor with enormous depth, and there isn’t anyone more exciting to bring this work to a new audience. His casting is also groundbreaking as the traditional image of Christ will be seen in a whole new way.”

The R&B crooner took to social media to share the exciting news. “Bless up. I’m playing Jesus Christ in #JesusChristSuperstar Live!” he wrote.

This won’t the first time Legend will be flexing his acting skills! The “All of Me” singer has appeared in “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Underground,” and “American Dreams.” In 2016, Legend also served as producer on the critically acclaimed film “La La Land,” and also has a supporting role in the film.

The event is set to take place on Easter April 1, 2018 at the Marcy Armory in Brooklyn, New York!
