Jerrod Carmichael Signs Huge Overall Deal with 20th Century Fox Television

When one door closes, another one typically opens. It has been announced that writer, producer, and actor multi-hyphenate Jerrod Carmichael has signed an overall deal with the 20th Century Fox Television.

20th Century Fox Television was the studio behind the production of Carmichael’s since-retired critically-acclaimed comedy sitcom The Carmichael Show. There, Carmichael co-created, executive produced, and co-wrote a handful of episodes of the 32-episode series where he also starred as the titular protagonist. NBC cancelled the show after its third season, but now – three months later – Carmichael has a two-year overall deal with the production company that made it all happen.

Carmichael will be responsible for developing new projects for 20th Century Fox Television underneath the Morningside Entertainment banner, alongside longtime producer Ari Katcher. In the new deal, Carmichael will write, produce, as well as play a supervisory role over writers working for the company. He also has the potential to star in original programming the studio produces.

“The end of The Carmichael Show was a heartbreak for everyone at this studio, and Howard [Kurtzman, president of business operations at 20th] and I swore we’d be back in business with Jerrod if we had anything to say about it,” 20th TV president of creative affairs Jonnie Davis said in a statement. “Lucky for us, he said yes. This is a guy whose inspiration is Norman Lear and it’s not hard to see why — he speaks about what’s happening in the world and he gets people talking even if the subject matter is uncomfortable. Oh, and he’s also hilarious. He’s an incredible talent and a ‘television savant’ and we’re thrilled he’s making 20th his exclusive home.”

Carmichael got his big break in 2014’s Neighbors, a film that led him to working with The Carmichael Show co-creator/executive producer Nicholas Stoller. He has also headlined a couple of stand-up comedy specials for HBO. Carmichael also had a role in the recent fifth installment of Transformers. The writer/actor is also hard at work on his memoir.
