Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” Lands No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

She did it! Cardi B’s hit single “Bodak Yellow” reaches No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, dethroning Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.”

According to Billboard, Cardi B (born Belcalis Almanzar) became the first female rapper to top the charts without the assistance of any credited artists in 19 years. She follows Lauryn Hill who landed the No. 1 spot with “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in November 1998. The Bronx native is only the fifth female rapper to ever lease the Hot 100 after Hill. Lil Kim ruled the charts for five weeks in 2001 alongside Mya, P!nk, and Christina Aguilera for “Lady Marmalade,” Shawnna led as featured on Ludacris’s hit “Stand Up,” and Iggy Azalea reigned for seven weeks in 2004 with “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX. Cardi is also the first female soloist to top the Hot 100 with a debut track unaccompanied by another artist since Meghan Trainor with “All About That Bass” that led for eight weeks in September 2014 – as Billboard reports.

We can all agree that 2017 is Cardi’s year and she has truly come up in a remarkable way. The Afro-Latina who first gained popularity on social media soon worked her way up to small screens and then the charts. Not counting her spot on the Hot 100, this year’s breakout rapper currently has nine BET Hip Hop Award nominations; including Single of the Year, Best New Hip-Hop Artist, and MVP of the Year. Earlier this year, Cardi was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the 2017 BET Awards.

Cardi’s success has also earned her the attention of a slew of celebrities and music legends including Beyoncé, Ms. Tina Knowles, J.Cole, and Janet Jackson. Yep, you heard that right… the legendary Janet Jackson performed her 1989 hit “What Have You Done For Me Lately” during her State of the World tour and when the “Bodak Yellow” beat came on – Janet Killed it.

Earlier this month, Cardi – who is signed to Atlantic Records –revealed that she’s ready to release her debut album. Although there is no official release date for the album, Cardi teased on her Instagram that a new project is “coming soon.”

Congrats Cardi!
