Issa Rae Set to Star Opposite Amandla Stenberg in Drama ‘The Hate U Give’

Insecure creator and star Issa Rae has officially joined the cast of the coming-of-age drama The Hate U Give.

According to Variety, Rae is set to star opposite Amandla Stenberg in Fox 2000’s adaptation of the drama. Based on Angela Thomas’ novel of the same name, the film will follow a 16-year-old girl named Starr (Stenberg) who grew up in a poverty-stricken area and attends a suburban prep school. After witnessing a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, Starr is torn between her opposing worlds as she attempts to speak her truth. Making her film debut, Rae will star as April – the activist that helps Starr find her voice and speak up.

Directed by George Tillman Jr. (Notorious, The Longest Ride, Power), the film will have a star-studded cast. Some notable names include Russell Hornsby (Fences), Algee Smith (Detroit), Lamar Johnson (The Next Step), Common, and Girls Trip star Regina Hall. Back in 2016, the rights to The Hate U Give were picked up by Fox 2000, Temple Hill, and State Street in a competitive situation – as reported by Variety. The novel, published in February 2017, has spent 22 weeks on the New York Times young adult best-seller list after debuting at No.1.

The second season of Insecure has returned to HBO and has recently been renewed for a third season. The acclaimed actress also starred in Jay-Z’s latest 4:44 music video “Moonlight.” Rae joined other Hollywood heavyweights including Jerrod Carmichael, Lil Rel Howery, Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Tessa Thompson, and Hannibal Burress in the visual.

The Hate U Give is currently in development.
