On the eve of the 16th anniversary of Aaliyah’s death, MAC Cosmetics announced they will be continuing her legacy with the launch of the M·A·C Aaliyah collection.
After a Change.org petition urging the cosmetic company to create a collection inspired by the late R&B songstress surfaced two years ago, the petition racked up over 26,000 signatures, which was enough to sway the brand into creating a collection set to release summer 2018. On Wednesday (August 24), MAC Cosmetics took to social media to share the exciting news – crediting the fans for the collaboration.
“Aaliyah is truly one in a million — an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspires us all,” the cosmetic company wrote on Instagram. “Today we join her countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the M·A·C Aaliyah collection. You made it happen! Stay tuned in 2018. #AaliyahforMAC.”
Along with the announcement from MAC Cosmetics, the official Twitter account of the late songstress shared the news of the collaboration.

The announcement comes after MAC released a collection inspired by the late Selena Quintanilla in October 2016. Also a result from a fan-driven petition, the line featured several lipsticks ranging from deep reds to a sultry nude, eye shadows, and blush.
Throughout 2017, MAC has been honoring #BlackGirlMagic! Recently the brand announced the collaboration with self-proclaimed queen of rap, Nicki Minaj. The collection includes two nude shades: one named Nicki’s Nude and the other called The Pinkprint. The collaboration with Nicki comes after the second collaboration the brand had with award-winning actress Taraji P. Henson.
Back in 2016, MAC released Henson’s collection and to no one’s surprise, it sold out instantly. Recently, the Hidden Figures actress and MAC announced the second installment of her Viva Glam campaign.
