Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” is Officially Double Platinum

Ever since its release late last year, “Redbone” has been on heavy rotation for music listeners. The song, reminiscent of a funk-driven hybrid of a call to action to stay woke meets a 70’s throwback love song, has always been one of the standout tracks from Childish Gambino’s third studio album release Awaken My Love! Now, “Redbone” has the certification to prove it.

The hit is has now certified double platinum!

On Thursday (July 13), RIAA announced artists and songs who hit the gold and platinum marks as a part of mid-year acknowledgements. Donald Glover, known musically by the alias Childish Gambino, was one of those said acts. “Redbone” was announced to have hit the double platinum mark. And that’s not all. The rapper/singer’s Awaken My Love! album was announced to have reached gold status, accumulating sales of over 500,000 copies. This is the second gold album for the artist, who received his first gold plaque for his sophomore album Because The Internet.

That’s a big feat for any artist, especially in the digital age.

Donald Glover has seen a career high as of late and the train doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Yesterday, the actor was also included among the 2017 Emmy nominees for the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards airing this fall. For his FX show Atlanta, Glover landed nominations for “Outstanding Comedy Series” and “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.” The multihyphenate entertainer was also nominated in the Emmy category “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” where alongside his brother, Stephen Glover, he was nominated for the Atlanta episode he wrote, “B.A.N.,” while his brother saw a nod for “Streets on Lock.”

The actor can currently be seen onscreen in a supporting role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is in theaters now.

Although Glover has announced that he will retire Childish Gambino after his next and final album, it is nice to see that he is finally getting the recognition musically that he deserves. “Redbone” is a song that will be played for years to come. Stay woke.
