Madonna Opens Pediatric Center In Malawi Named After Her Daughter

With her children by her side, Madonna sat at the opening of The Mercy James Centre For Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care this past Tuesday (July 11). Named after her daughter, Mercy James, the music icon opened Malawi’s first-ever pediatric surgery and intensive care center.

Back when Mercy was just four years old, Madonna fought against Malawi’s highest court to win the right to adopt Mercy James. Now, Madonna stood by 11-year-old Mercy at the opening ceremony – recalling the nearly four-year journey she had to go through to call Mercy her own. Before meeting Mercy, Madonna had successfully adopted her now 11-year-old son David Banda. According to CNN, the “Like a Prayer” songstress shared the importance of the state-of-the-art center at the ceremony.

“The Mercy James Center remains not only a world-class intensive care hospital, but also a superior learning environment to train the next generation of Malawian healthcare workers,” she said. “This is as much about healing as it is about empowerment.”

Mercy James went on to express her gratitude and how the center can help save lives in Malawi.

“It is a great honor to know this hospital is named after me,” Mercy said. “But what’s more important is that we may help many kids and save many lives.”

Located in Blantyre, Malawi, The Mercy James Center will also include a playroom, an outdoor play structure, and inspirational murals curated by Madonna and other artists. According to Raising Malawi, the center, developed with Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and Malawian Ministry of Health, will aid the hospital and double the number of surgeries performed on children each year. The Mercy James Center will also offer an intensive care unit, which will increase the chance of survival after serious surgeries.
