Misty Copland Set to be Guest Judge on “World of Dance”

Ballerina megastar Misty Copeland will be a guest judge on NBC’s highest rated summer competition series World of Dance.

Set to judge on the July 18 and July 25 episodes, Copeland will be joining round three of the competition, “The Cut,” where the shows competitors will face the most intense cut of the season. According to a press release, is it said that more than half of the acts will be eliminated from the competition – with only the top two acts from each division will move on to the Division Final.

“When judging the best of the best, we knew we needed an all-star guest judge with passion and credibility to mentor these incredible dancers,” Executive producer and judge, Jennifer Lopez said in a statement. “Misty Copeland is at the top of her game and we are so honored that she was able to lend her expertise and experience to the World of Dance stage.”

Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in San Pedro, California, Copeland made history after becoming the first African-American principal ballerina in the history of the American Ballet Theatre. Beginning her ballet career at the age of 13, she has starred in numerous shows with the 78-year-old company including, Cinderella, Swan LakeThe Nutcracker, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, and Firebird. The history-making ballerina has also been featured in countless TV programs and publications, including Today, 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning. 

NBC’s World of Dance gives dancers a chance to not only showcase their amazing talents, but also gives participants a chance to receive a life-changing prize of $1 million. Bringing together the world’s most elite dancers, the competition challenges them with an unlimited range of dance, including tap, ballet, ballroom, break dancing, hip hop, and more. Copeland will be joining judges Derek Hough, Ne-Yo, Jennifer Lopez, and host/mentor Jenna Dewan Tatum.
