O’Shea Jackson Jr. to Star as Dock Ellis in New Film

Pittsburgh Pirates player Dock Ellis made baseball history back in June of 1970 after pitching a no hitter against the San Diego Padres. Ellis later stated that he was under the influence of LSD during the time of the monumental game. Today, the story of Dock Ellis will hit the big screen with Straight Outta Compton star, O’Shea Jackson Jr. as the lead.

The Pirates pitcher was also known for having a lively personality and being an advocate for the African American community. It has been reported that after he was forbidden by the MLB commissioner for wearing hair curlers at a workout, Ellis quickly called out the hypocrisy in the Major Leagues, as the organization allowed a white player to wear a shoulder-length toupee.

Ellis played in the MLB for 12 years with the Pirates, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and Texas Rangers. At the end of his lengthy career, Ellis admitted that he never pitched a game sober and pursued treatment for his drug and alcohol addiction. After becoming clean, Dock Ellis spent the rest of his life aiding others by becoming a drug and alcohol counselor. He went on to rehabilitate prisoners in Pittsburgh and California, served as a counselor for professional athletes, and ultimately helped start the Black Athletes Foundation for Sickle Cell Research before his death in 2008.

The film is set to be developed under Ice Cube’s production company Cube Vision, who recently partnered with Kelvin Wu’s AID Partners, a Hong Kong media investment company – per Deadline. Along with Cube, Jeff Kwatinetz (Notorious, Barbershop: The Next Cut) and David Permut (Hacksaw Ridge, The Color of Rain) will serve as producers. The script for the Dock Ellis biopic will be written by Joey Poach.

“Part of Cube Vision’s mission is to bring compelling, provocative and timely stories to life,” said Kwatinetz per Deadline. “With Dock, we feel that now is the right time to tell Dock Ellis’ complex, but powerful, true story and couldn’t be happier to partner with David Permut, whose incredible body of work speaks for itself.”

This comes after Cube Vision and O’Shea Jackson Jr. found success in the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton. The film told the story about hip hop’s most influential group N.W.A. and earned over $200 million worldwide and put O’Shea on the map.

There is no release date confirmed for the Dock Ellis film, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any trailers or teasers!
