Yara Shahidi is Going to Harvard!

Back in April 2017, Yara Shahidi announced that she was admitted to every school she applied to, now the Black-ish star announced which school she’ll be attending. Here’s a hint… #CrimsonPride!

Yesterday (June 6), Shahidi took to Instagram to share the exciting news. Posting a picture of herself sporting a Harvard University sweatshirt – the actress, model, and activist captioned the photo: “’The paradox of education is precisely this – that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated.’ ~ James Baldwin #CrimsonPride.”

With plans to double major in African American studies and sociology, Shahidi shared that she was lucky enough to score four recommendation letters from Michelle Obama– including one for the former First Lady’s alma mater, Harvard University. “She is very amazing and such a supporter, which is something very surreal to say,” Shahidi said to W Magazine of the former First Lady, adding that Obama gave her a “go get’ em, tiger” pat on the back before taking her AP exams.

Like Malia Obama, Shahidi shared that she plans to defer college for one year. “I know when Malia Obama announced [she was deferring], she got a lot of slack, but I feel like what’s interesting is I know so many people that are deferring. It’s more than to just roam around or just sit down and stare at a wall, but it will also give me an opportunity to work,” Shahidi told People. “I’ve been working more than half of my life and that’s always been balanced with school and all of the other responsibilities, so to have a year to focus on work and to focus on specified interests will be nice before I pick a career and choose what I want to study and my life path.”

The 18-year old star will definitely need some extra time, especially after it was announced that her Black-ish spinoff College-ish finally found a home on Freeform and is expected to debut its 13-episode season in 2018. According to Variety, the show centers around Shahidi’s character Zoey Johnson, as she sets off for college but realizes that everything doesn’t go her way after she leaves home. Although Shahidi has a very busy schedule ahead of her – we know she’ll thrive at Harvard!

Congrats Yara!
