It’s lit! The CW network has released a first look at its new DC Comics superhero series Black Lightning.
Originally created by writer Tony Isabella and artist Trevor Von Eeden, the first Black Lighting comic debuted back in 1977 and was one of the first major African American superheroes to appear in DC Comics. Adapted from the DC comic, the action series follows Cress Williams (Prison Break, Hart of Dixie) as high school principal, Jefferson Pierce, who struggles with his past as a vigilante that harnessed electricity while attempting to keep his family and neighborhood safe from violence. However, Pierce is forced to suit up once again as Black Lightning and fight against the street violence that is beginning to effect his daughters and community.
Written and directed by husband-and-wife duo Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, Black Lightning is set to be executively produced by Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern, Arrow, and The Flash) and the Akils. According to the Huffington Post, this will be the CW’s fifth DC comic drama and will be the Akils’ second project under their three-year production deal with Warner Bros.
Black Lightning is set to premiere during the 2017-2018 television season on the CW.
