Tracee Ellis Ross, Zendaya, Jada Pinkett Smith Among Judges Selected for a New Women in Film Competition

Women in Hollywood are getting in formation and doing their part to bridge the gap between men and women filmmakers. Glamour magazine has teamed up with Girlgaze, a digital media company to bring the #NewView competition to fruition. The mission of the competition is to spotlight women in film, particularly women who are behind the camera in the director’s chair. The competition will highlight the perspective and stories of women from all over the world. Among the judges for the competition are some pretty familiar faces. Actresses Zendaya, Tracee Ellis Ross, Geena Davis, Jada Pinkett Smith, Rashida Jones, and Amandla Stenberg are just a few of the big names who will be judging the female-centric competition.

In reference to the competition, Glamour magazine’s editor-in-chief Cindi Leive told The Hollywood Reporter, “Obviously much has been written and said about the barriers for women directors and we all know the statistics. But we wanted to do something that was more meaningful than just discussing and reporting on the problem.”

Girlgaze’s founder, Amanda de Cadenet, added in a statement, “Our objective at Girlgaze is to help females close the gender gap by telling their stories. We are choosing to support this demo because they deserve a seat at the table.”

In order to enter, aspiring directors will create their own short film approximately three to five minutes in length and will focus on an issue they may have or they have had, their life in general, their culture on a greater scale - a story that’s theirs and retold through their lens. Five winners will be selected by Leive, de Cadenet, and the panel of judges.

“By providing young female professionals with a platform on which to display their work, Glamour x Girlgaze is giving them a seat at the table, while creating an opportunity for us to see what stories engage the next generation of women,” Tracee Ellis Ross, one of #NewView’s judges shared about the opportunity.

All five winners selected will be awarded $3,000, have their submissions released exclusively on the Glamour.com and Girlgaze.com platform, and will receive a production budget to create a short film for Glamour or one of the major brands they have partnered with exclusively.
