Looks like Taraji P. Henson is giving us a new definition of a “tough cookie” in her next film! The award-winning actress is set to star in the new action-thriller Proud Mary as a stone cold killer.
Henson plays Mary, a hit woman who works for an organized crime family in Boston, whose life turns around when she meets a young boy after a professional hit goes bad. According to a press release by Screen Gems, the young boy played by Jahi Di’Allo Winston (The New Edition Story), rouses the maternal instincts she never knew she had.
Starring alongside Henson is said to be an all-star cast, including Danny Glover, who plays Henson’s unforgiving boss; Billy Brown (How to Get Away With Murder), as a fellow professional hit man who was once romantically involved with Mary [Henson]; Margaret Avery (The Color Purple), who plays opposite of Glover as his wife; Xander Berkeley (The Mentalist), the drug-dealing sadist Mary eradicates, provoking a turf war.
Written by John Stuart Newman (Days of Our Lives) and Christian Swegal (Stasis), Proud Mary will be directed by Babak Najafi (London Has Fallen) with Taraji P. Henson and Glenn S. Gainor (No Good Deed) teaming up again as executive producers.
Henson is known for her highly acclaimed and popular role as Cookie Lyon in the FOX hit Empire. More recently, she portrayed Katherine Johnson in the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures, which told the story of three African American women mathematicians who played a vital role in aiding John Glenn becoming the first American to orbit earth. The film opened no. 1 at the box office and grossed over $22 million.
Proud Mary is set to begin filming through May 2017 in Boston and surrounding Massachusetts cities. The film, by Screen Gems, will be released in theaters nationwide January 2018.
