Aretha Franklin Announces She’s Retiring After New Album’s Release

Aretha Franklin retiringAretha Franklin has had a long and successful reign as the Queen of Soul, but now the singer says she’s ready to step down and enjoy the rest of her life.

The 74-year-old singer revealed that she plans on retiring after she completes her next album. “I must tell you, I am retiring this year,” Franklin told Detroit Local 4’s Evrod Cassimy. “This will be my last year. I will be recording, but this will be my last year in concert. This is it.”

The Queen of Soul plans to spend more time with family, but will still do “some select things, many one a month, for six months out of the year.”

Retirement doesn’t mean that she’ll be slowing down, however. “I feel very, very enriched and satisfied with respect to where my career came from, and where it is now,” Franklin said. “I’ll be pretty much satisfied, but I’m not going to go anywhere and just sit down and do nothing. That wouldn’t be good either.”

With regards to her coming album, Franklin says that her fans can look forward to hearing a lot of different sounds and that Stevie Wonder will be producing. “Of course, several of the songs are going to be produced by Stevie (Wonder), and of course there’s only one Stevie, right?” she said.
