‘Moonlight,’ ‘Hidden Figures,’ and ‘Fences’ Nab 2017 Oscar Nominations

moonlight-sag-awards The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards® have been announced and Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Fences are among the top black films to receive noms.

All three films received tons of buzz and critical-acclaim since their release and now they all officially join the ranks of the year’s best projects. Moonlight scored 8 nominations, Fences received 4 and Hidden Figures nabbed 3 noms. All three films are up against one another for the coveted Best Picture slot, along with: Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, La La Land, Lion and Manchester by the Sea.

It also appears as if the Academy put more effort into diversifying the nominees, with plenty of actors of color being named in individual categories: Viola Davis, Dev Patel, Octavia Spencer, Denzel Washington, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Ruth Negga all received nominations.

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood &
Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m.
ET/4 p.m. PT.
