Lee Daniels Talks New Series ‘Star’ and Why He Chose a White Lead

lee-daniels-talks-star-raceLee Daniels stopped by The Real recently to set the record straight about why his latest black show stars a white girl.

The series went on a nationwide casting search to find its titular character and her bandmates, with Daniels and co. finally landing on newbie Jude Demorest,24, to lead the pack. When Daniels stopped by the talk show, the ladies asked why it was important to have a white lead, Daniels said that hopefully his casting will help heal the country. “In the beginning, [the story] is told through a white girl’s perspective because I felt that the country instinctively, I thought needed to heal,” he said. “And I think that this white girl is so fabulous that black people will embrace her and white people will embrace her.”

The producer/director also said that he was inspired to get the show off the ground now because of the current racial climate in America. “This was before our president was in. I felt that we were are at civil war. Black boys were being shot, and I didn’t understand what was going on,” he said. “So I wanted to address, as I do with most of my work, politics- what’s going on right now in America. So we explore the excitement and the glamour of the evolution of a girls’ group weaved in with a little bit of what’s happening now in the streets. So where Empire is about success, sort of like Dynasty– this is like Good Times.”
