Issa Rae Teases What’s Next for Issa, Molly and Lawrence After ‘Insecure’ Finale

issa-rae-insecure-finaleThe finale of Insecure‘s first season packed one heck of an emotional punch, with Issa regaining one important figure in her life while seemingly losing another.

If you aren’t caught up on Insecure, we suggest you finish the season then come back and keep reading. In other words, SPOILERS BELOW!

Issa and Molly

Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) were still recovering (or lack thereof) from their fallout at the fundraiser when the finale began, but by the end of the episode, Molly was there as the rock Issa needed after realizing that Lawrence had left her. Issa wrote in her blog for Entertainment Weekly that the friendship between the two women is the heart of the show and that there were always plans for them to come back together as friends in the end. “We always knew that it would hurt to have them fight, but their friendship is so strong that it could withstand a little hard truth. They’re not frenemies; they actually need each other and they love each other — so we knew they’d make up,” she wrote.

Issa teased that next season, we may get a glimpse of their relationship with a new dynamic- both of them single at the same time, blogging “We’re also really excited to develop what Issa and Molly possibly being single together looks like.”

She also revealed the deeper meaning of that final shot of Molly and Issa on the couch. “We were so excited to come up with the idea of Issa and Molly sitting on the couch together at the end of the season because their relationship is truly the core of the show, and to have Molly sitting on the couch with Issa at end shows how they were the only ones who were ever truly “in this” together.”

Issa and Lawrence

Issa and Lawrence (Jay Ellis) are no more- that’s a fact that was made very clear during the last 5 minutes of the episode. The lingering question for fans after the finale is “What’s next?” when it comes to the couple’s future? Issa says that the future is unclear right now, but that their breakup will probably mirror how they happen in real life- and they’re rarely ever simple. “I think the break up will hit both Lawrence and Issa pretty hard and I think break-ups are rarely ever clean, especially for couples who lived together,” Issa wrote. “So we know that Lawrence won’t be completely out of her life forever.”

Lawrence and Issa’s final interaction was a phone call from him to her asking if they could talk when she got home from her girls’ trip, but Issa (and the audience) was surprised to discover that Lawrence actually decided to move out and leave Issa completely, a decision that Issa says came from a place of being fed up. ” For that final scene where he goes back to his complex, seeing Thug Yoda and the old couch, then stepping into his old apartment felt like a regression to him. In a way, he would rather leave than face the hurt and Issa’s transgressions. I think for him, being in that environment, knowing that he had vowed to commit to this girl just a month or two before, was just too much to forgive at that point.”
