‘Fences’ Stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis Cover ‘Essence’

denzel-washington-viola-davis-essence-fencesViola Davis and Denzel Washington grace the latest cover of Essence magazine, just in time to usher in the arrival of their upcoming film version of Fences.

Washington produced, directed and stars as Troy Maxson in the film version of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play, which focuses on an African American father struggling with race relations in the United State while trying to raise his family in the 1950s and coming to term with the events of his life. Viola joins Washington onscreen as his wife, Rose- a reunion for the actors who portrayed the characters on Broadway in 2010, winning them both Tony Awards.

It’s no surprise that the pair have a great working relationship now- they first worked together back in 2002 on Antwone Fisher– which helped when it came to translating the stage play on camera, this time with Denzel in the director’s’ chair. “It’s not always that a director can say one thing that unlocks a scene when you’re blocked, especially with a scene that you’ve done so many times, but Denzel did that time and time again,” Davis told Essence. “He has a huge honesty gauge, so when he asked me to trust him, I did.”

Denzel and Viola’s issue of Essence, which includes their full cover interview, is available on newsstands now.

Fences heads to theaters everywhere Christmas Day.
