Ice Cube to Star as Fagin in ‘Oliver Twist’ Remake

Prepare to see Ice Cube in the role you never realized you wanted to see him in- the rapper/actor is preparing to star in Disney’s Oliver Twist remake (no, not as Oliver).

The NWA rapper has signed on not only to star in the remake as Fagin, but also as one of the project’s producers via his company Cube Vision. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the new Oliver Twist will be a modern musical with sources describing it as crossing many genres, including hip-hop. Cube and Kwatinetz are writing the treatment, with Cube attached to play Fagin.”

Also coming onboard for the project is Hamilton‘s Tony-winning director Thomas Kail, who worked with Lin Manuel-Miranda on that and In the Heights, as well as directing FOX’s Grease Live!.

In case you aren’t familiar with the classic Charles Dickens tale, it’s about an orphan who goes from living in a labor house to living in the streets of London, under the tutelage of Fagin, who leads a gang of pickpockets. Disney previously tapped into the tale for the inspiration behind their animated film Oliver and Company, and it’s also been adapted into the famous musical Oliver!.

The project is still in production and there’s no release date set as of yet.
