Denzel Washington Gives Son a Dose of Reality in ‘Fences’ Teaser Trailer

The first teaser trailer for Fences isn’t filled with explosions and flashy music tracks–it’s emotional and real.

Denzel Washington produced, directed and stars in the film version of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play, which focuses on an African American father struggling with race relations in the United State while trying to raise his family in the 1950s and coming to term with the events of his life. Denzel and Davis star as Troy and Rose Maxson and in the teaser we get a look at their tense homelife.

The very first line we hear in the teaser trailer is Troy’s young adult son asking “Hey Pop, can I ask you a question? How come you ain’t never liked me?”. The rest of the trailer is Washington’s character giving a speech to his son about what it means to be a man and take care of your responsibilities. “Now don’t you go through life worrying about whether somebody like you or not. You best be making sure, that they’re doing right by you,” Troy tells his son.

In addition to Washington and Davis, Fences also stars Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Saniyya Sydney.
