The 28-year-old NBA MVP applauded the quarterback for his bravery during an interview with CNBC. “I love that there’s freedom of speech and that he can stand for what he believes in,” he said. “There’s gonna be people that disagree with him. There’s gonna be people that agree with him, which is what I think our country stands for. Hopefully it will drive the conversation to the bettering the equal rights and treatment of African-Americans and people of color.”

Kaepernick, 28, drew national attention when he made the decision to sit during the national anthem during a preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers late last month. While his actions initially sparked outrage, many fans and celebrities have come to Kaepernick’s defense saying that he is simply exercising his First Amendment Right to free speech.

Curry also went on to tell CNBC that he hopes Kaepernick’s protest can lead to a deeper conversation about inequality and racial tensions in America. “I applaud him for taking his stand. And hopefully the conversation is about what his message was and not ‘Is he gonna stand, or is he gonna sit for the national anthem?’”

The star basketball player also commended Kaepernick for his pledge to donate $1 million to organizations relevant to his protest.
