John Legend and Tika Sumpter are teaming up again to bring the little known story of Black Wall Street to TV.

The actress and singer are currently making their rounds to promote their new film, Southside with You, which follows the story of the Obama’s first date- now the pair are ready to bring more black history to the screen (only this time, the small screen).

John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co. (whom he runs with Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorious) has already seen huge success with it’s WGN series Underground and now both companies, along with Sumpter, are developing a series that will recount the event that became one of the largest mass killings of African-Americans in the history of the United States.

Deadline provided a detailed description of Black Wall Street, which you can read below:

Set in Tulsa, OK, in the opening decades of the 20th century, Black Wall Street examines the strong middle-class African-American community that built up in the divided city. Owning businesses and employing many whites in the segregated state, the Greenwood area of Tulsa was a haven for black professionals and raised capital for its own entrepreneurs and ventures. In May 1921, several white attackers burned the neighborhood in a two-day rampage that saw 300 die and the community devastated and largely forgotten for decades.

“We’re so excited to continue to grow our relationship with WGN America,” Get Lifted’s Mike Jackson told the site. “Our experience working with them on Underground has been fantastic. Additionally, we’re looking forward to working with our friend Tika Sumpter to help tell this incredible story that many people know nothing about.”

Tika responded to the news of the series breaking by sharing how much she’s looking forward to the new project. “Excited to Executive Produce this w/ @johnlegend ,his company Get Lifted Films and @WGN #blackwallstreet,” she tweeted.

The series is still in very early development, but could debut 2018.
