Zendaya’s Role in ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ Reportedly Revealed

Zendaya-SpiderManZendaya’s career just keeps getting more and more impressive-and the young star isn’t even 21 yet!

Fans learned that the 19-year-old actress landed a starring role in the upcoming Marvel film Spider-Man: Homecoming earlier this year and have been speculating about her role ever since. Now it’s been mostly confirmed that the Disney actress will play none other than Spidey’s love interest Mary Jane-making her the first black star to ever be cast in the role.

According to TheWrap, two sources with knowledge of the film have confirmed that “Zendaya will be playing long-time Spider-Man love interest Mary Jane Watson in next summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

The site tried to reach out to Sony, as well as reps for Marvel and Zendaya with no luck, but plenty seem to believe the rumors, so much so that racists were up in arms about the casting- sparking a response from Guardians of the Galaxy helmer James Gunn.

“For me, if a character’s primary attribute – the thing that makes them iconic – is the color of their skin, or their hair color, frankly, that character is shallow and sucks. For me, what makes MJ MJ is her alpha female playfulness, and if the actress captures that, then she’ll work. And, for the record, I think Zendaya even matches what I think of as MJ’s primary physical characteristics – she’s a tall, thin model – much more so than actresses have in the past.”

We’re still waiting on that official role confirmation, but we’re definitely onboard with Zendaya as Mary Jane.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into theaters July 7, 2017.
