TV powerhouse Shonda Rhimes has heard the call for Jesse Williams to be fired from his Grey’s Anatomy role because of his stirring BET Awards speech- and she’s opted to send those requests straight to voicemail.

Rhimes, whose company Shondaland is responsible for creating and producing Grey’s Anatomy, has stepped into the ring to take a position on the matter of the petition targeted at Williams- and her position is standing firmly behind her talent.

The petition was started in response to Jesse’s Humanitarian Award acceptance speech at the 2016 BET Awards. The star used his moment in the spotlight to talk about a few highly controversial, yet highly relevant, racial issues facing the black community in America and naturally some of those who watched were offended by the speech.

The petition was started by Erin Smith and according to the document, calls Jesse’s speech “racist, hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards.” Smith also goes on to claim that “If this was a white person making the same speech about an African American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams’ actions.”

Well, prepare to be mad haters. The boss has spoken and Dr. Jackson Avery is here to stay.

Williams has since responded to all the backlash as well, urging his fans and supporters to not feed into the hype. “Do not promote empty people & their tantrums. Pure clickbait to gain followers, attention & money, for themselves, not you. Never you.”
