Serena Williams has been revealed to be the world’s highest paid female athlete.

Forbes broke the news that the star tennis player has officially unseated her rival Maria Sharapova who held on to the highest paid title for the past 11 years. Williams reportedly earned $28.9 million over the last year and her over-all career prize money totals to $77.6 million, which is more than two times what any other female athlete has claimed.

Williams has achieved greatness throughout her career, which is reflected in how much she makes, but for many female athletes the battle for equal pay is still an everyday struggle. The star athlete recently talked to Glamour about how she agrees that there is still much to be done in the area of equal pay and that she’d like to be part of the process to help set things right. “These sports have a lot of work to do,” she told the mag. “And I really hope that I can be helpful in that journey because I do believe that women deserve the same pay. We work just as hard as men do. I’ve been working, playing tennis, since I was three years old. And to be paid less just because of my sex—it doesn’t seem fair.”

She continued, “Will I have to explain to my daughter that her brother is gonna make more money doing the exact same job because he’s a man? If they both played sports since they were three years old, they both worked just as hard, but because he’s a boy, they’re gonna give him more money? Like, how am I gonna explain that to her? In tennis we’ve had great pioneers that paved the way—including Venus, who fought so hard for Wimbledon to pay women the same prize money they pay men, and Billie Jean King, who is one of the main reasons Title IX exists.”
