Miss USA 2016 Deshauna Barber Makes History

Deshauna Barber Miss USA 2016
As if being the country’s newest Miss USA isn’t a big enough accomplishment, Deshauna Barber had to take it one step further by making history the moment she won.

The 26-year-old who took home this year’s crown isn’t just a beauty queen- she’s also the Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland. This makes Barber the first military service member to win Miss USA. Oh yeah, and she works full-time as an IT analyst for the Department of Commerce. Feel inadequate yet?

The pageant aired on Sunday June 5 on FOX and during question and answer portion of the the annual pageant, Barber blew her moment out of the water. She was asked about the Pentagon’s recent decision to open all combat jobs to women and give her thoughts on those that “questioned whether this has put political correctness over our military’s ability to perform at our highest level” and her answer was spot-on.

“As a woman in the United States army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military,” she responded. “We are just a tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I am powerful, I am dedicated and it is important that we recognize that gender doesn’t limit us in the United States Army.”

Barber has said that she hopes to focus her platform on “PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployments and suicide prevention in the Armed Forces.”

We also have to note that the top 3 contestants for Miss USA were all women of color this year.

Congrats to Barber and all the young ladies who participated.
