$429.6M Powerball Prize Goes to NJ Mom and Her 7 Children

Powerball Winner Family
When 70-year-old Pearlie Smith and her 7 children went in on a Powerball ticket together, they had no idea that their lives were about to change forever.

Valerie, Marcia, Steven, Jacqueline, Tracy, Kathy, Renee and their mother, Pearlie, have come forward as the winners of the $429.6M Powerball jackpot and the family had no problems telling the media what they planned to do with their newfound fortune. Among the plans for the money are tithing 10% to the church, paying off mortgages and student loans, and starting a program that will help at-risk young women.

Pearlie, a pastor at a Trenton, New Jersey church, said that the winning numbers came to her in a dream and credits that dream to “divine intervention.” The family wanted to make sure they had their new windfall correctly managed before coming forward to the public.

“Winning the Powerball jackpot is a life-changing event. Congratulations to the ticketholder(s) and to the retailer who sold it,” Carole Hedinger, New Jersey Lottery executive director, said in a release.

So how did the family choose to receive their funds? In a $284 million cash payout, naturally.

The prize was the 6th largest Powerball jackpot in history.
