Fifteen years after the tragic airplane crash that killed Aaliyah, Damon Dash is finally opening up about the singer’s tragic passing.
On Tuesday’s episode of The Real, the Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder was asked if there was any chance he could have been on the plane with his then-girlfriend at the time of her death. “There is no chance that if I was there, we would have been on that plane,” he said. “It would’ve never happened that way.”
Aaliyah was on her way back from shooting a music video in the Bahamas when the small plane she was on crashed during takeoff killing her and eight others.
“If I was there, I would have made sure that that jet that was supposed to be for her, the G4, she would have been on that,” he added. “I wouldn’t have gotten on that plane. It probably would have been different.”
Dash met Aaliyah through his accountant in 1999 and the pair dated until her death in August of 2001. Though they were not formally engaged, in interviews given after Aaliyah’s death, Dash stated that the couple had planned to marry.
