Jesse Williams Developing Harry Belafonte Biopic

Jesse Williams Harry BelafonteHarry Belafonte is a living legend and actor Jesse Williams wants to bring the 89-year-old actor and social activist’s story to the big screen.

Williams, a social activist in his own right, recently revealed that he’s busy working on a new passion project that’s sure to excite: he’s planning to produce a Harry Belafonte biopic and has cast himself in the title role. Jesse made the announcement during a recent interview for W. Kamau Bell’s podcast, Denzealots. “I care more about activism and social justice and law than I do about acting. I have an awesome job that I love, but there’s this magnetic force that is constantly pulling me toward activism. I just have to do it,” Williams said during the podcast. “I’m a father now, I’ve got responsibilities, and there’s only 24 hours in a day.”

It’s not hard to see how or why Williams would want to bring Belafonte’s story to audiences. Aside from serving as a mentor to the Grey’s Anatomy star, Belafonte has worn many impressive and inspirational hats throughout his lifetime from being an early Civil Rights Movement supporter, to being dubbed the “King of Calypso”, and fighting for human rights in general.

The 34-year-old actor previously mentioned the project during an Ebony magazine interview and discussed why it’s so important for the stories of black legends and black history to be told. “If we are not taught to value Black achievement, legacy, history and culture, it doesn’t matter what we’re doing and how much money we make, we can’t speak in a way that’s productive.”
