Actress Regina King won her very first Emmy on Sunday (Sept. 20) for her role as Aliyah Shaheed in American Crime.

“I should have brought one of those comedy speeches all of the comedy people had,” she said of being unprepared. “I was not expecting this.”

She then went into a list of thank yous that included her family, friends and coworkers.

“My amazing mother and grandmother who have taught me the power and the blessing of being a woman,” she gushed. “This is just absolutely amazing. My son, Ian, the fact that I get to share this night with you, the best date in the house. You make being a mother my greatest accomplishment. Cheers.”

King was up against Mo’Nique in Bessie, Zoe Kazan in Olive Kitteridge and American Horror Story: Freak Show’s Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates.

Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard presented the award at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
